We have all heard the saying, but Paula Gilbert explains why Breakfast has long been said to be the most important meal of the day and why a good healthy breakfast fuels the body and brain for the rest of the day.During the night after a long period without eating your blood sugar levels drop to their lowest levels it is therefore important to have a healthy breakfast to kick start your metabolism and level blood sugar levels.
Skipping breakfast may seem like an easy way to keep calories down but in the long run it does more damage than good. Low blood sugar levels will cause you to crave sugary and fatty food and send you running to the coffee shop for a latte and muffin at 11am adding on more calories than you would have eaten had you had a sensible breakfast.
Not only might it cause you to eat more but the longer you go without food, the more your metabolism slows down. Your body senses that it has not eaten in a long time and thinks that food is scarce. When you do finally crack and eat, your body will cling on to the calories you consume and store them away just in case you go for another period without food. So, by skipping breakfast you will probably end up eating more and storing more fat as a result.
Start your day with a well balanced breakfast and begin your day as you mean to go on.
